Here’s this week’s show:

To start the show, we’ll be discussing the idea of having mandatory webcams in slaughterhouses that anyone can have access to, to enable the consumer full transparency when it comes to seeing how our food gets to our plates.

Cow Ribbons

With Mother’s Day fast approaching, it is that time of year to recognize the love, caring and compassion that mothers represent – human or non-human. Mary-Chris Staples of Liberation BC joins us to speak about their upcoming Cow Ribbon Campaign to bring awareness to all the issues that cows experience in the dairy industry, and having their motherhood taken away. Please visit http://cowribbon.comfor more information about this campaign and to get your ribbon.

After finishing the interview I did with Jackie about our Cow Ribbon campaign, I was mortified to realize that I forgot to mention one of the most important issues regarding the dairy industry – what happens to all the babies. When a dairy cows give birth, the baby is taken away from her almost immediately. While the mother bellows for her baby, the baby cries back for his mother. Babies have been know to suckle on the fingers of their captors as they are dragged away. A female may be kept and raised to live the same sad life as her mother but a male is seen as useless in this industry. Male calves are throw out or sold to veal farmers. some are killed within a couple of days for low grade ‘bob veal’ while others are chained in tiny stalls for six months where they are deprived of exercise and proper nutrients to produce sought after ‘fancy’ or ‘white’ veal.
I also wanted to mention some of my favourite vegan dairy substitutes like So Nice for coffee (not the barista blend, but the small container) and Coconut Bliss Ice Cream!
