Annual Canadian Seal Slaughter starts this week
The annual Canadian seal slaughter (aka “Canada’s Shame“) commenced this Monday as sealers journeyed to broken ice floes in the north, and garnered a kill of 1200 baby seals – or 0.3% of their 400,000 quota for this year. We recount the experience of the Director of the Humane Society of Canada Rebecca Aldworth’s personal observation of the seal hunt this week (her 13th year doing this), as well as discuss our personal opinions on the issue, raising questions such as: Why is the Canadian government allowing the seal hunt to continue for the sake of the “economy” when it is actually a money-losing business? Why is the Canadian government pushing for the sale of seal pelts and meat in other countries instead of keeping such “quality products” that it hugely supports in our own country for our own citizens to enjoy? And why does the Canadian government so adamantly continue to run the seal hunt when a vast majority of its constituents (Canadians) oppose it, as does the European Union, which has now banned the import of seal pelts? Listen in for some juicy and controversial discussion!
