Peter Fricker, Keeping Exotic Animals As Pets; & Marisa Miller Wolfson, Vegucated

Here’s this week’s show:

To start this episode, Alison presents a review of the cookbook “Vegan Desserts: Sumptuous Sweet for Every Season” by Hannah Kaminsky. It’s a beautiful book that any dessert connoisseur will fall in love with!

Peter Fricker, Vancouver Humane Society, on Keeping Exotic Animals as Pets

Our first interview is with Peter Fricker, who is the Projects and Communications Director of the Vancouver Humane Society. The Vancouver Humane Society is dedicated to exposing animal abuse and assisting individuals, businesses and governments to end animal suffering, cruelty and exploitation.

Peter speaks with us on one of the issues that VHS educates the public on, which is the keeping of exotic animals as pets. He tells us about all the reasons why boa constrictors, parrots and iguanas have no place in our human dwellings here in Canada (or North America) where they are far, far away from their natural habitats.

Marisa Miller Wolfson, Vegucated

Our feature interview is with Marisa Miller Wolfson, who is the writer, director and editor of the feature-length film Vegucated, which recently won “Best Documentary” at the Toronto Independent Film Festival.

As a full-time food activist, Marisa has organized roughly 70 grassroots workshops and screenings of award-winning documentaries about healthy, humane, eco-friendly eating all across North America. She decided to tell a story that hadn’t been told on film before and completed Vegucated with the help of colleagues at the FilmShop and the Brooklyn Filmmakers Collective.

Vegucated is a guerrilla-style documentary that follows three meat- and cheese-loving New Yorkers who agree to adopt a vegan diet for six weeks and learn what it’s all about. Making its rounds at screenings across North America, Vegucated will début here in Vancouver next week with a free showing, hosted by Liberation BC, at the Vancouver Public Library on January 24th at 7pm.
