Heaven is for Animals Too: Animal Ethics in Christianity, plus Advocacy and Vegan Traveling in Hawaii

Listen to this show here!

November 11th is Remembrance Day, and to start this show, we speak about animals as victims of war. The organization Animal Aid UK has changed their Purple Poppy initiative to a “Purple Paw” Badge, to commemorate all animal victims of human exploitation, and we learn why.

Animals, Advocacy and Vegan Traveling in Hawaii

Co-host Alison and her new friend Rider!

Fresh back from Oahu, Hawaii, we chat about co-hosts Alison and Jen’s Hawaiian adventure, during which they spent a week not only enjoying encounters with a variety of Hawaiian wildlife, such as fish, pigeons, chickens and cats, but also got to meet some human companions and animal ambassadors – Pearl the Pig and Rider the Pit Bull (who we featured in an interview on the show a few weeks ago, with their human companion Kiana Mohika-Miyashiro)! The ghastly Honolulu Zoo (which lost its accreditation last year) was an unfortunate reality, as is SeaLife Park, but there is hope for more animal sanctuaries (instead of zoos and aquariums) to come in the future in Hawaii, which we discuss.

In this segment, we also speak about encounters with animals in Hawaii, as well as our experiences with the burgeoning animal rights scene in Oahu, and traveling as a vegan in far off places such as Hawaii. (and how to do it successfully!)

Melinda Cerisano on Heaven is for Animals Too: Hope and Comfort for Believers and Skeptics

Did you know that Christians make up almost one-third of the population in the world? (over 2.2 billion as of 2010)

For our feature interview, we have author Melinda Cerisano on the show. As well as an animal behaviourist and professional airline pilot, she is a lifelong animal lover and Christian, and has spent many years studying the Bible and its messages regarding animals and the afterlife.

In this interview, she shares with us some of her findings and dispels common discrepancies in Christian teachings with regards to showing compassion and significance for animals, as written in her book “Heaven is for Animals Too: Hope and Comfort for Believers and Skeptics”.

She answers a question that is still common in today’s day and age of Christianity: do animals have souls? She also speaks about the true meaning of the term “dominion”, how the ancient laws of the Bible are violated in today’s modern factory farming world, and she explains in detail passages of the Bible that make every indication that animals are a part of the Christian God’s plan in the afterlife.

We also ask her to explain if God is an “animal rights person” (given all the use and torture of animals in Biblical times) and if Christians in today’s modern times should live a vegan life, in order to align their Christian values of compassion with their daily lifestyle choices.

In this podcast, we feature the special extended version of this interview!
