To begin this show, we put out a call for an open position we have at Animal Voices radio for a new co-host and co-producer, as Aylon is leaving us! If you think you might be interested in this fantastic opportunity to be a voice for the animals, please listen to this show, and then send us an email to radioanimalvoices@gmail.com

Then Aylon shares with us his experiences at the Victoria Anarchist Bookfair last weekend and the animal rights workshop he presented there. Alissa was busy doing outreach as well for the animals last week, and she chats about leafletting at the BCSPCA Paws for a Cause event last week in Vancouver.

The Myth of Vegan Purity

Can we ever truly wipe the blood of other animals off our hands? We discuss what it means to be vegan and dissect the myth of vegan perfection.

Animal exploitation is so entrenched in our society that it is nearly impossible to avoid every animal byproduct. How can we remain true to our values of nonviolence and speak out for the rights of other animals without becoming obsessive and thus perhaps turning potential animal advocates away?

Martin Guinness, “Cages of Shame” and the Bear Bile Farming Industry

Our feature interview is with multi-award-winning filmmaker Martin Guinness. He is the producer, director, and editor of the documentary film called “Cages of Shame”, which just came out this year and tells the story of bear bile farming in China and the mission to save ten bears and close down a bear farm. This picture won the Humane Society of the United States ACE award this year and has been named as one of “7 Can’t-Miss Films of 2012” by VegNews Magazine. Martin hails from Australia, and speaks with us today about the film “Cages of Shame” and the bear bile farming industry.

The non-profit organization Animals Asia is featured in “Cages of Shame” and has been very instrumental in rescuing over 300 bears from the captivity of bear bile farms. You can find out more about the work they do here.

Lets do what we can to fight this unspeakable practice.
Words can not even describe what a despicable state of affairs we have going on here in Asia. It is a region & culture that has a very different attitude toward animals in general.
It is not just a case for education, -it will take decades, centuries even, to try and alter a psyche that tolerates this kind of thing.

I will not be sleeping well tonight. for weeks probably.

How the hell is this still going on in the 21st century.

This shouldn’t be happening I disagree with cruelty this bad. I wish people would get a life and stop being idiots. These bears deserve to roam free not be stuck in stupid little cages where they can barely move!

Some needs to be held accountable!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! this is a disgrace. I wish that for all that are consuming this bile that you have 100 years of illness . I wish that you too were locked up in little cages and stuck with needles each and everyday. I wish that god punishes each of you in a way that is filled with complete horror that you are subjecting these beautiful creatures to. Please PUT THESE PEOPLE IN JAIL

Hi Colinda, Thanks for listening! We definitely appreciate your passion for justice. You sound very angry, and rightly so. The desire to hold someone accountable is totally understandable but often it’s the larger systems that we’re fighting, not the individuals who are doing their job. I feel that jail isn’t the answer, unfortunately. Check out our show on animal liberation and the prison industrial complex.
