We present to you The Dairy Show!

We start the show by re-capping and chatting about our huge Animal Voices Compassionate Thanksgiving and Variety Show community event that we held this week, which drew out 145 compassionate and hungry people to share in a feast of vegan food and good company. Then Alissa speaks about her experience at the Vancouver Aquarium demo that was held last weekend.

The Phenomenon of Drinking Another Species’ Milk

In this short segment, we explore the remarkable paradox in our society in which we find the human species to be the only species that a) not only drinks milk after weening, but b) also drinks milk from a different species. Discussion among the co-hosts ensues to give our thoughts on this issue, and to bring to light some aspects of this circumstance that will cause our listeners to start questioning for themselves the messages that they have received from the media and society in general about what is “normal” and what is not.

We end this segment by playing Vegan Smythe’s tongue-in-cheek comedy piece and then song entitled “Human Milk Dairy”, which you can also see him sing here:

Shira Lane, “Got the Facts on Milk?” Documentary

Our feature interview is with film maker Shira Lane. She’s the Producer, Director, Writer and Editor of the documentary film called “Got the Facts on Milk?”, also known as “The Milk Documentary”. “Got the Facts on Milk?” is a wildly entertaining feature documentary that questions the deep-rooted American belief in the health benefits of milk. Shira’s dairy allergy prompted her to examine the scientific research on the subject, and, baffled by the lack of consensus, she took a road trip to the US Department of Agriculture’s Nutrition Information Center for the facts. On her month-long, 4600-mile journey to Washington, DC through the American Southwest and Bible Belt, she met with top doctors and researchers, dietitians, dairy farmers, parents, teachers, and plenty of “ordinary Americans” who provide both comic relief and food for thought in this thought-provoking and highly educational film.

The film raises questions about dairy’s role in cancer, osteoporosis, weight gain, asthma, acne, early menstruation, and more; covers the preponderance of lactose intolerance in communities of color, and explains why dairy consumption is fraught with high-stakes political, economic, ethical and environmental considerations.

Got the facts on Milk? has won several film festival awards, including the audience award at the 2008 Rhode Island International Film Festival, and has outraged filmgoers around the world. It sparked a riot at the South Korea Green Film Festival, shocked the audience at DocAviv Documentary Film Festival in Israel, and traumatized attendees of the EcoCinema Environmental Film Festival.

There will be a local screening of this film in Vancouver on Tuesday, October 16th at the Vancouver Public Library, at 7pm. All the details about it can be found here.
