Happy World Vegan Day and World Vegan Month!

Today’s show is dedicated to the celebration of living a compassionate lifestyle in which we strive to do the “least harm” towards all living beings, for the benefit of the animals, our Planet, and ourselves as human-beings. This lifestyle is called “veganism”.

This month marks co-host Alison Cole’s 10th year anniversary of volunteering on the Animal Voices radio show! To start the show, we present a special guest on the phone line who was part of helping to revive the program in 2009. Karl Losken, one of the co-founders of Animal Voices, gives us a history of how the show began many, many years ago.

Then Sinéad, Elyse and Alison share their stories of what it means for us to live a life of veganism in this world where carnism is the norm. (seeing meat eating as being “normal, natural, and necessary”.) We stand strong for compassion towards our fellow creatures, and we also feel right about living in alignment with our values.

For our feature interview today for World Vegan Day, we welcome back long-time vegan advocate and expert Colleen Patrick-Goudreau on the show.

Colleen’s compassionate living philosophy has been propelling plant-based eating into the mainstream and forever changing how we view animals. Colleen is a recognized expert and thought leader on the culinary, social, ethical, and practical aspects of living compassionately and healthfully. Colleen is a speaker, cultural commentator, podcaster, and award-winning author of seven books. She has also founded and hosted the very popular vegan-themed podcast “Food For Thought” for the last 14 years.

Just in time before the release of  her brand new upcoming book that comes out on November the 12th, Colleen is here on World Vegan Day to speak to us about her 7th book entitled “The Joyful Vegan: How to Stay Vegan in a World That Wants You to Eat Meat, Dairy and Eggs”. Colleen is known as “The Joyful Vegan,” and she has guided countless individuals through the process of becoming vegan.

In this book, and in the interview, Colleen shares her insights into why some people stay vegan and others stop. This is due to the social, cultural and emotional aspects of how people navigate being vegan in a non-vegan world. We also learn about the concept of “willful blindness”, which many people experience when they are blocking out the realities of where their food comes from.

Colleen goes in depth into several “stages” that a person may typically go through once becoming vegan, and she speaks about the tools to overcome these stages and succeed. These stages include: “Compassion Fatigue, Self-Care, and the Voracious Consumption of Information”, “Coming Out Vegan” to family and friends; “Finding Your Tribe: Embracing Your Identity, Building Community, and Feeling a Sense of Belonging”, and “Finding Your Voice” ( How to Talk to a Hunter or Anyone Else with Whom You Disagree”).
