Vegan Meal Prep with JL Fields, and Vesanto Melina, RD, on Canada’s new Food Guide

Listen to this show here!

To start the show, along the theme of embracing vegan eating for Veganuary and 2019, we’ll share some of our own tips of preparing vegan meals for a busy week ahead.

Vesanto Melina, RD, on the updated Canada’s Food Guide

The new version of Canada’s Food Guide, which promotes eating more plant foods and less meat and dairy!

For our first interview, we have award-winning Canadian registered vegan dietitian Vesanto Melina on the show. She is the head author of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics’ current position on vegetarian diets, and she has co-authored many leading vegan nutrition books, such as “Becoming Raw”, “Becoming Vegan: Comprehensive Edition”, “Becoming Vegan: Express Edition”, “Cooking Vegan” and, most recently, “The Kick Diabetes Cookbook”.

The highly anticipated updated version of the Canada’s Food Guide was just released this Tuesday, and this time around, it advises that Canadians eat more plants and less meat! The Canada’s Food Guide has traditionally served Canadians as one of our top trusted resources of nutritional advice.

This new version of Canada’s Food Guide is evidence-based, and was not created with influences from the meat and dairy industries, who tried to lobby to steer the guide’s outcome, which Health Canada rejected.

This new Guide not only provides nutritional advice, but also advises Canadians to think critically about their food choices, and to be aware of marketing campaigns that may try to influence us to make unhealthy eating decisions. The meat and dairy categories have also been completely eliminated, and the new Guide encourages Canadian to eat more plant-based protein and fats.

In this interview, Vesanto shares with us her expert opinion on the content of the new Food Guide, and what it will mean for the future of the health of Canadians.

In this show, JL shares with us her tips and advice on prepping vegan meals with success, as written about in her new book, plus her life as a vegan wellness educator and animal advocate.

Check out this fun video in which JL shares meal prep methods for her Cinnamon and Spice Overnight Oats, Not-Tuna Salad, Mediterranean Beans with Greens, and Chickpea and Artichoke Curry. Looks so fun, easy and delicious!
