Fern Levitt, Film Director of Sled Dogs
Our feature interview is with filmmaker Fern Levitt, whose documentary Sled Dogs premièred at the Whistler Film Festival on December 3rd. The film takes an unprecedented, critical look at the commercial dog-sledding industry, and examines the harsh lifestyles endured by the dogs involved – both at sled-dog tourism operations, and during Alaska’s famous Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race.
Fern has been a documentary film maker for over 20 years, mostly focusing on human rights issues. She has personally met and interviewed several world leaders such as Presidents Clinton, Bush Sr, Gorbachev and Vaclav Havel.
Sled Dogs has already picked up two awards following its premiere at the Whistler Film Festival, including Best Female-Directed Documentary, and a tie for Best World Documentary.
In this interview, Fern joins us to discuss the sled dog industry, the film, and some of the controversy surrounding its premiere.
