Martin Guinness, “Cages of Shame” and the Bear Bile Farming Industry; & The Myth of Vegan Purity

To begin this show, we put out a call for an open position we have at Animal Voices radio for a new co-host and co-producer, as Aylon is leaving us! If you think you might be interested in this fantastic opportunity to be a voice for the animals, please listen to this show, and then send us an email to radioanimalvoices@gmail.com

Then Aylon shares with us his experiences at the Victoria Anarchist Bookfair last weekend and the animal rights workshop he presented there. Alissa was busy doing outreach as well for the animals last week, and she chats about leafletting at the BCSPCA Paws for a Cause event last week in Vancouver.

The Myth of Vegan Purity

Can we ever truly wipe the blood of other animals off our hands? We discuss what it means to be vegan and dissect the myth of vegan perfection.

Animal exploitation is so entrenched in our society that it is nearly impossible to avoid every animal byproduct. How can we remain true to our values of nonviolence and speak out for the rights of other animals without becoming obsessive and thus perhaps turning potential animal advocates away?

Martin Guinness, “Cages of Shame” and the Bear Bile Farming Industry

Our feature interview is with multi-award-winning filmmaker Martin Guinness. He is the producer, director, and editor of the documentary film called “Cages of Shame”, which just came out this year and tells the story of bear bile farming in China and the mission to save ten bears and close down a bear farm. This picture won the Humane Society of the United States ACE award this year and has been named as one of “7 Can’t-Miss Films of 2012” by VegNews Magazine. Martin hails from Australia, and speaks with us today about the film “Cages of Shame” and the bear bile farming industry.

The non-profit organization Animals Asia is featured in “Cages of Shame” and has been very instrumental in rescuing over 300 bears from the captivity of bear bile farms. You can find out more about the work they do here.
