To kick off the show we discuss the recent coming-out party for Vancouver’s newest animal rights group – the Black Pawprint Collective, an anarch@ feminist collective devoted to total animal, environmental, and human liberation through direct action and education.

The new collective recently hosted an event called Total Liberation Movie Night where they screened the new film If a Tree Falls: A Story of the Earth Liberation Front at Rhizome Café.

Veg Fest Vancouver

Veg Fest Vancouver
Veg Fest Vancouver is a day-long outdoor festival which will be happening for it’s second year on August 4th, 2012. On today’s show we discuss details of the upcoming Veg Fest Vancouver with the organizer!
The festival, which is 100% vegan, will feature food vendors, tables for many animal protection organizations, local cruelty-free businesses, and much more! And best of all, it’s entirely FREE to attend.
This event is made possible by the help of many volunteers, and the great folks at Saving Animals Canada. Lots of human power is needed to help this event be a huge success so if you want to volunteer on the day of the event, please contact the organizer through the Veg Fest Vancouver website.

Maximum Tolerated Dose

We feature a interview with the film’s director, Karol Orzechowski. I had a chance to pre-screen this film and was really blown away by how beautiful the film is. This is certainly not your average ‘talking heads’ style documentary; the touching stories, striking images, and lovely sounds are entirely captivating. The music, by Wyrd Visions and Bryan W. Bray, is especially entrancing and I find it to be the perfect compliment to the artfully blended images. I feel it’s important to note that while the many of the stories in the film are heartbreaking, there’s not really any explicit, graphic violence in the film.

Maximum Tolerated Dose is the first feature-length documentary by Decipher Films. Equal parts found-footage mash-up, verité investigation, and artful meditation, the film charts the lives of both humans and non-humans who have experienced animal testing first-hand, with hauntingly honest testimony of scientists and lab technicians whose ethics demanded they choose a different path, as well as the simultaneously heartwarming and heartbreaking stories of animals who have seen both sides of the cage. MTD aims to re-ignite the debate about animal testing by bringing these rarely-heard perspectives to the fore.

The film is currently being screened as part of the Open the Cages Tour which is described as a collaborative effort between artists, filmmakers, activists and musicians all united under the banner of Animal Liberation. It’s an ambitious project currently making stops along the west coast. OTC is featuring screenings of MTD along with music performances, demonstrations, and activist workshops. The tour is just wrapping up this week in Vancouver with a free screening of Maximum Tolerated Dose at the central branch of the Vancouver public library on Friday, August 3rd at 7pm.
