This show features an interview with Chelsey Hawkings, a co-owner of the local family business called Simply Delish Soup and Salad. We also talk about the BCSPCA’s spotlighting videos on animal companion adoptions, an open job position at the Food Empowerment Project (F.E.P.), and the Vancouver Downtown Eastside’s 2021 calendar which has just become available for purchase. The calendars are sold to help raise veterinary funds for the animal companions of Downtown Eastside.

The song played this week is “Be a Vegan”, a parody cover of Billie Eilish’s hit song “Bad Guy”.

Trevor and Trenell tell their story of adopting Honey, a sweet Corgi that was rescued from the BCSPCA.  Honey was a young mother when Trevor first met her. In this short segment, Trevor shares the importance of patience, planning, and taking time to find the right companion, all while living in a busy city where pet-friendly housing can be a struggle.

Food Empowerment Project Job Posting

Food Empowerment Project (F.E.P.) is looking for a full-time Executive & Programs Assistant (EPA) to work closely with F.E.P.’s Executive Director and help with a variety of administrative tasks that align with F.E.P.’s mission and support the organization’s goals. The Food Empowerment Project aims to create a more just and sustainable world by recognizing the power of an individual’s food choices. By spotlighting the abuse of animals on farms, the depletion of natural resources, unfair working conditions for produce workers, and the unavailability of healthy foods in low-income areas, FEP works to encourage a more compassionate society.

If you or anyone you know may be interested in the position, the job posting can be accessed here.

The 2021 “Pets of the DTES” calendar

This year the Overdose Prevention Society (OPS) helped create the 2021 “Pets of the DTES” Downtown Eastside calendar.

With our combined resources and financial help from a UBC Community University Engagement Sustainability (CUES) grant, the calendars were designed to raise funds and provide Veterinary care to animal companions within the DTES. Calendars are $20 each and will come with a charitable receipt. If you are a member of the community & cannot afford to purchase a calendar please message Loved and Local directly through their website or Facebook page.

Simply Delish: a soup business with spunk

Who We Are – Simply Delish Soup and Salad

Simply Delish Soup and Salad is a family business, owned by Chelsey and Brad Hawkings. Brad’s Mom, Paulette, started Simply Delish Soup and Salad over a decade ago while working as a hairstylist. No one could believe how fast the business took off and each weekend the whole family would fan out and work as many farmers markets as they could. Fast forward a few years, Brad and Chelsey decided to quit their regular jobs and work full time alongside their Mom and Dad at Simply Delish. In Sept of 2016, Brad’s parents decided it was time to step back and let the next generation take over. At that time Simply Delish Artisan Enterprises Inc. was created.

In our feature interview, Chelsey and I discuss what it is like juggling a small business while growing as an individual and learning about what it really means to live by your morals. We get into our personal philosophies in relation to our veganism  and discuss how Chelsey, Brad, and her two children transitioned from veg-curious to a family of activists. Come Visit Simply Delish at the Fort Langley Market or the Port Moody Market! You can also find Simply Delish Soup and Salad online and at the Vegan Supply Co.
