Our feature interview is with Kelowna-based animal liberationist Amy Soranno. Amy is one of four BC animal advocates who have been charged with a combined total of 21 indictable offences for their roles in exposing abhorrent animal cruelty at the Excelsior Hog Farm in Abbotsford, BC last year. You may remember the “Meat the Victims” action on April 28th, 2019, which we at Animal Voices covered extensively.

This was a secretly organized event where 200 animal advocates gathered at sunrise at the Excelsior Hog Farm, which is known to have some of the highest standards of animal welfare in BC, to show the public what the animal farming industry is all about. 60 of the activists, armed with cameras and video streaming, crossed the property lines and 48 entered one of the barns to show to the world what lay inside the windowless factory farm that would never otherwise offer a public tour.

In this interview, Amy tells us about the latest developments of this saga, in which justice still has not been served. She and her 3 fellow activists (Nick Schafer, Roy Sasano and Jeff Rigear) made their first appearance in court last Thursday, September the 3rd.

You can sign the Change.org petition to call upon the BCSPCA to press charges against the animal abuser at Excelsior here. And if you would like to make a donation for the defendants to help pay for their court case, there is a GoFundMe fundraiser here.

When Celebrities Quit Their Veganism: A Message for Miley Cyrus

Headlines were made last week when 7 year vegan-for-the-animals Miley Cyrus announced publicly that she is no longer vegan. She said that, due to her brain not functioning properly, she had to start eating fish to get her Omega 3 Fatty Acids. But as most vegans know, there are, of course, vegan sources of Omega 3s that we consume to get all of our nutrients. (think: flaxseed, chia seeds, hemp seeds, walnuts, and algae supplements)

We asked naturopath and nutrition expert Dr. Matthew Nagra for his sound nutritional advice about Miley’s situation, and Omega 3s. In this segment, he also shares a personal message for Miley and invites her to come back to veganism.
