September 22nd, 2017 marks both World Rhino Day and Elephant Appreciation Day. On this show, we feature interviews with two organizations working to protect these animals from both here in North America, and on the ground in Africa.

Sadly, we were unable to reach Collet for this interview due to connection issues. We sincerely hope to have her on the show in the future! We instead spent this segment sharing information about the Black Mamba Anti-Poaching Unit and discussing some of our own experiences with elephants.

The first of its kind, the Black Mamba Anti-Poaching Unit is an award-winning team of anti-poaching rangers in South Africa, made up almost entirely of women. Collet Ngobeni joins us to talk about the Black Mambas’ work as both wildlife protectors and community role models.

Tessa Vanderkop, Elephanatics

Elephanatics is a Vancouver-based elephant advocacy organization, founded in 2013. They aim to assist global elephant conservation efforts through educating Canadians about issues of ivory poaching, habitat loss, and the continued exploitation of elephants by humans, and to connect Canadians directly with conservation partners in Africa & Asia.

In 2014, Elephanatics started hosting the Global March for Elephants & Rhinos here in Vancouver. Now in its 4th year, the 2017 march takes place on September 30th, 12PM at Creekside Park.

Tessa Vanderkop is the Director of Strategic Relationships & Advocacy for Elephanatics. She joins us on the show to discuss the work of her organization, and what we can do to support elephant protection efforts from here in Canada.
