Travel Tips & Recommendations for Compassionate Eating: Los Angeles

Alison shares some of her recommendations on places to eat in Los Angeles, California, based on her recent trip there. Los Angeles is one of her favourite places to find cruelty-free vegan food, featuring 20 vegan restaurants and over 30 vegetarian restaurants! There always seems to be new places popping up as well to get some good vegan grub, and Alison shares some new finds as well as standard favourites, including Real Food Daily in Santa Monica and West Hollywood, The Veggie Grill in El Segundo and West Hollywood, Madeleine Bistro in Tarzana, Shojin in downtown L.A., and the Newsroom in West Hollywood.

Gene Baur, Farm Sanctuary

Our feature interview is with Gene Baur, animal activist, best-selling author, and president and co-founder of Farm Sanctuary, which was the very first farmed animal rescue organization, founded in 1986, and has 2 shelters, in New York and California. In his work for the animals, Gene has conducted hundreds of visits to farms, stockyards, and slaughterhouses to document conditions, and his pictures and videotape, exposing factory farming cruelty, have been aired nationally and internationally, educating millions. His efforts have been covered by leading news organizations, including the New York Times, The Larry King Show, the Los Angeles Times, Chicago Tribune, Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, ABC, NBC, CBS, and CNN television networks. His book, entitled Farm Sanctuary: Changing Hearts and Minds about Animals and Food, was published in 2008 and has become a national best seller.

Mr. Baur will be making a speaking appearance this Sunday here in Vancouver as part of the Gimme Shelter fundraising event. This precedes the Walk for Farm Animals, a nation-wide fundraiser for Farm Sanctuary, which happens here in Vancouver this Saturday!

Here is an inspiring video of rescue and hope describing how Farm Sanctuary came to save a cow in the streets of New York in “Maxine’s Dash for Freedom”:
