Listen to this show here!

September 1st is Japan Dolphins Day, and also marks the opening season of the annual dolphin slaughter in Taiji, Japan.

Nutritionist Nikki Hurst Answers all Your Vegan Questions!

Pre-vegans have a lot of questions about protein, iron, calcium, omegas and B12. In order to best advocate for the animals, we need to know the right answers to these questions as well as be able to explain the ill effects of obtaining these nutrients from animals and animal secretions (eggs and milk). Vancouver-based nutritionist, Nikki Hurst joins us for an educational show aimed at improving our advocacy for animals while also giving out accurate information during outreach.

Local filmmaker and animal advocate, Gary Charbonneau (Vancouver Aquarium Uncovered) discusses the Vancouver Aquarium’s lawsuits against him and the Vancouver Park Board.

In honour of Japan Dolphins Day, we are discussing how the Vancouver Aquarium obtained their last three dolphins: Spinaker, Helen, and Hana.
According to the research of Gary Charbonneau, Spinnaker was bought from Osaka Marine Aquarium where he lived for 10 years performing tricks. He had no stranding numbers which means he probably came from the drive and not fishing nets as claimed.

Helen performed at Enoshima Aquarium for 9 years before Vancouver purchased her. She also had no stranding numbers.

Hana also came from Enoshima where she lived for 2 years. She was the perfect candidate for release but Vancouver never even considered rehabilitating her under their own rehabilitation program. Instead, they listened to the Japanese government who said she wasn’t releasable. She was the only one to have stranding numbers.

Not one of these dolphins was rescued or rehabilitated from the aquarium. Hana did not meet the criteria for coming into Stanley Park, but the aquarium brought her and Helen in without Park Board Commissioners knowing. Tune in to find out more details about the background of these dolphins and their origins from Japan.
