February 20th is National Love Your Companion Animal Day, so we open this episode with personal stories of special companion animals we’ve known and loved.

Our first interview is with Marisa Smith, Giulia Giommi, and Lily Wieczorek, all just 13 years old and from Victoria, who have taken up the cause of trying to ban trophy hunting of grizzly bears in BC. They are joined by Val Murray of Justice for BC Grizzlies. Polls show that 91% of British Columbians disagree with trophy hunting, yet the practice continues. These inspiring young activists speak with us on the strategies they’re using to make trophy hunting a thing of the past. We encourage listeners to sign Justice for BC Grizzlies’ pledge to help end the grizzly hunt.

Sara Gardner of CAARE Rescuecaare shepherd

Our feature interview is with Sara Gardner, co-founder and co-director of CAARE (Companion Animal Advocacy and Rescue Effort), a local nonprofit organization dedicated to humane education, rescue, and prevention of companion animal overpopulation. Founded in 2014, CAARE rescues and helps rehome an estimated 400 dogs each year. Sara shares information with us about how to help prevent overpopulation of dogs and other domesticated animals, and tells us amusing stories about some of the wonderful dogs she and her colleagues have rescued and rehomed. To see the dogs currently available for adoption and fostering at CAARE, visit their Facebook page.
