Mark Hawthorne on Avoiding Activist Burnout, and Highlights from Animal Advocacy Camp

Listen to this show here!

To start the program, Caroline and Alison chat about the exciting new vegan products that they discovered at the CHFA West show two weeks ago, and how the innovation for cruelty-free food products seems to be on the rise!

We also speak about the petition to call upon the Canadian government to put an end to cetaceans (dolphins and whales) in captivity, as called for in the pending Bill S-203. This petition needs to be signed by June 17th and you can do so here.

Highlights of Animal Advocacy Camp 2016

AAC2016-1Last weekend was a busy one for animal advocates in Vancouver! We hosted the 5th annual Animal Advocacy Camp, which is Vancouver’s premier grassroots conference for those who want to learn more and advocate for the animals.

In this segment, we play a few audio clips from some of the many speakers throughout the two day event. Plus, we give our thoughts about the highlights of the weekend, and discuss how an event like this can engage community and empower people to become active for the animals.

Mark Hawthorne, Avoiding Activist Burnout

Our feature interview is with Mark Hawthorne. He is a well-known author and animal advocate from California, and we had the pleasure of seeing him speak at last weekend’s Animal Advocacy Camp here in Vancouver. Mark is the author of three books on animal rights: “A Vegan Ethic: Embracing A Life Of Compassion Toward All”, “Bleating Hearts: The Hidden World of Animal Suffering”, and “Striking at the Roots: A Practical Guide to Animal Activism”, which empowers people around the world to get active for animals. He stopped eating meat after an encounter with one of India’s many cows in 1992 and became an ethical vegan a decade later.

At the conference, he spoke about Avoiding Activist Burnout, a relevant topic for those of us who work tirelessly for the animals or in other social justice causes. In this interview, he explains the signs and symptoms to look out for in burnout, he gives tips and advice on methods to deal with burnout both psychologically and logistically, and he shares his own experiences of how he has suffered from burnout in the past, and how he now practises self-care to combat these issues.
