Direct Action Everywhere (DxE)

direct action

Our feature interview is with Wayne Hsiung, founding organizer for Direct Action Everywhere (DxE). Wayne is a lawyer and a writer who studied behavioral science at the University of Chicago and MIT and previously served on the faculty at Northwestern School of Law.

Direct Action Everywhere (DxE) is a grassroots direct action network for animal liberation. Its mission is to create waves of activism that cascade through society.  DxE is a platform and not an organization. Anyone who takes action in accordance with their principles — notably, species equality — is part of DxE.

On December 14th 2013, Direct Action Everywhere (DxE) held vigils at Chipotle locations in seventeen cities across North America, including Vancouver, to demand “Peace, Not Violence” during the holiday season for the millions of animals killed by the chain. The demonstrators split into visually distinct groups (“Peace” and “Not Violence”) to contrast the celebration of animals in Chipotle’s marketing with the violence in the company’s actual practices. The protests, part of DxE’s “It’s not Food — It’s Violence” campaign, have grown in recent months, beginning with a single San Francisco “die-in” in October and spreading to 17 cities in just 9 weeks.

The next demo is being on January 25th 2014 with more than 23 cities participating worldwide. We speak to Wayne about Direct Action Everywhere and their campaigns.

World Weeks for the Abolition of Meat

Another worldwide protest is being held this weekend. The World Weeks for the Abolition of Meat (WWAM) has been held each year since 2009 and continues to be held on the final Saturdays of the months of January, May and September. Animal activists throughout the world hold actions to raise awareness for abolition of meat. We discuss this event and the importance of animal rights groups working together for the animals.
