Speaking Up for Sister Species

Lisa Kemmerer

Today philosopher-activist Lisa Kemmerer joins us to talk about connections between feminism and animal rights, and about her books Sister Species: Women, Animals, and Social Justice (2011) and Speaking Up for Animals: An Anthology of Women’s Voices (2012). She has also written or edited a number of other books including In Search of Consistency: Ethics and Animals ; Animals and World Religions ; Call to Compassion: Reflections on Animal Advocacy; and Primate People: Saving Nonhuman Primates through Education, Advocacy, and Sanctuary. Lisa is currently associate professor of philosophy and religions at Montana State University Billings.

Those who seek greater justice in our world need to work toward a deeper understanding of oppression. Activists need to develop the kind of understanding that will lead to a lifestyle—a way of being—that works against all oppressions.” Introduction to Sister Species

Fireweed

The phoenix of flowers; a pioneer species which flourishes after forest fires

We offer a short preview of the new book Defiant Daughters: 21 Women on Art, Animals, and The Sexual Politics of Meat. It’s filled with women reflecting on how Carol J. Adams’ book The Sexual Politics of Meat affected their activism.
Fireweed, a BC based defiant daughter in her own right, is an artist & photographer who has been active for many years as an ecofeminist in the social justice, environmental and animal rights movements. Her essay “Wicca, Ecofeminism, and Animal Advocacy: The Earth Path Less Traveled” was featured in a anthology edited by Lisa Kemmerer called Call to Compassion: Religious Perspectives on Animal Advocacy (2011).

Here’s one of Fireweed’s favourite songs of uprising!
