Behind the Doors of the Turkey Industry; 2011: Year of the Vegan!; Colleen Patrick-Goudreau, The 30 Day Vegan Challenge

We start the show by suggesting that folks make a list minute stop to our favourite 100% vegan & animal-friendly retailers, Nice Shoes and Karmavore.

Behind the Doors of the Turkey Industry

Most people celebrate the holidays by partaking in a feast. Today’s producer and host, Alissa Raye, encourages us choose compassionately and reminds us of the importance of bearing witness. She takes us behind the doors of the turkey industry and reads from Liberation BC’s “talking turkey” leaflet.

2011 – Year of the Vegan!

Carissa Thorpe, our guest co-host today, features a look back on the highlights for vegans and animals alike in 2011. “Vegan” seems to have been the word of the year in 2011; it finally hit the mainstream in a pretty big way! Carissa & Alissa discuss the special vegan editions of popular television shows, Daiya‘s rapid expansion across North America, and the many ways that Vancouver got way more vegantastic this past year.

Colleen Patrick-Goudreau on her latest book, The 30 Day Vegan Challenge!

We feature an interview with author, lecturer, podcast producer (Vegetarian Food for Thought) & animal advocate extraordinaire,  Colleen Patrick-Goudreau. She is the author of 3 cookbooks The Vegan Table, Colour Me Vegan, & The Joy of Vegan Baking as well as 2 books on compassionate living, Vegan’s Daily Companion and the book that we feature on today’s show, The 30 Day Vegan Challenge: The Ultimate Guide to Eating Cleaner, Getting Leaner, and Living Compassionately.

Colleen’s latest book is a resource & guidebook which gives people the tools & knowledge they need to make the transition into compassionate living. The colourful book addresses the myriad of challenges to embracing veganism and also features lots of recipes, and a month long meal-plan. In the interview today, Colleen answers why it’s such a challenge to go vegan, offers tips on transitioning, and, with sass and saavy, debunks commonly held myths about vegan nutrition.

If you’re interested in hearing more from Colleen, Animal Voices had the pleasure of interviewing her last year and featuring the book, Colour Me Vegan (check out our December 17th, 2010 show).
