Debra Probert on the Rodeo; and Karen Duncan, Vancouver Orphan Kitten Rescue

In this episode, we start with a re-cap of last weekend’s very first Veg Fest Vancouver, held at the Main Street Car Free Festival. Animal Voices was a part of this fun day and we enjoyed interacting with so many community members throughout the event.

Karen Duncan, Vancouver Orphan Kitten Rescue Association

Our first interview is with Karen Duncan, who is the President of the Vancouver Orphan Kitten Rescue Association. VOKRA is a no-kill, non-profit, all volunteer run registered charity dedicated to the rescue of cats in the Lower Mainland. Formed in the year 2000, VOKRA rescues over 1,400 cats & kittens per year, placing them in loving foster homes until they can be permanently adopted. Karen shares with us some of the good work that the people at this organization does for our feline friends.

Debra Probert, Vancouver Humane Society, on the Rodeo

Our feature interview is with Debra Probert, who is the Executive Director of the Vancouver Humane Society. The Vancouver Humane Society is a local registered charity dedicated to the humane treatment of animals and encourages individuals, organizations, and governments to take responsibility for the welfare and rights of domestic animals and wildlife influenced by human activities. In this spirit, Debra speaks with us about the animal welfare issues pertaining to the rodeo, and VHS’ current campaign concerning the Calgary Stampede rodeo.

VHS is asking the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge not to take part in the Calgary Stampede when they visit Calgary in July. The Stampede is using the royal couple to promote the Stampede and to endorse the rodeo. One action they are asking you, the public, to carry out is to contact Clarence House, the couple’s official residence, to ask them to stay away from the Stampede. Comments can be made on the Clarence House website.
